In a shocking incident that has left a Boston suburb and a church community in turmoil, a suspect is set to be arraigned on Tuesday in connection with the random killing of a couple who were celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary, along with the woman’s 97-year-old mother.
The victims, Jill D’Amore, 73, and Bruno D’Amore, 74, were discovered dead in their home in Newton after they failed to show up for Sunday services at Our Lady Help of Christians Church. Lucia Arpino, the woman’s mother, was also found deceased.
The authorities have arrested Christopher Ferguson, a resident of Newton who seemingly had no prior relationship with the victims, according to Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan.
At this time, it is unclear whether Ferguson has legal representation to speak on his behalf.
The Rev. Dan Riley of Our Lady Help of Christians described the victims as “wonderful people, church-going, kind, hospitable, salt of the earth.” A message to the parishioners emphasized the senseless act of violence that claimed the lives of the three individuals.
Paul and Ginny Arpino, relatives of the victims, expressed their grief in a letter to the church community. They fondly remembered Bruno as a vibrant personality and highlighted Jill’s dedication to beautifying the church’s surroundings.
Despite having no formal training, Jill lovingly cared for the flowers and decorated the church according to the liturgical seasons. Lucia Arpino, they mentioned, never missed morning Mass until the COVID-19 pandemic.
The initial investigation revealed that the victims sustained stab wounds and blunt force trauma. Signs of forced entry were found in the basement, and authorities described a scene of struggle, with blood-soaked crystal paperweights and broken furniture.
Ferguson has been charged with the murder of Jill D’Amore after an autopsy confirmed her death as a homicide. He also faces charges of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon causing serious bodily injury, as well as burglary.
Further charges are expected once the autopsies for Bruno D’Amore and Lucia Arpino are complete.
Although there was an attempted break-in half a mile away from the victims’ residence early Sunday, it remains uncertain whether the two incidents are connected, stated District Attorney Marian Ryan.
