Christie’s first stop was Bucha, where Russian troops were responsible for the deaths of approximately 1,000 civilians last year. The victims showed signs of torture, and mass graves filled with hundreds of bodies were discovered after Bucha was liberated from Russian control. Christie met with the mayor of Bucha and visited one of the mass grave sites.

During his meeting with Zelenskyy, Christie shared that the main reason for his visit to Ukraine was to witness the situation firsthand and share his experiences with others. He also mentioned the prevalence of the Ukrainian flag being raised in the United States and expressed his belief that a majority of Americans support Ukraine, despite political disagreements.

Christie commended Zelenskyy and advocated for increased assistance to help Ukraine succeed in its war against Russia. In response to a reporter’s question about Americans who view aid to Ukraine as a waste of money, Christie explained his visit as a means to make the situation more tangible for the American people. He emphasized the importance of visualizing the reality on the ground.

Notably, Christie is the second Republican candidate for president to visit Ukraine, following former Vice President Mike Pence’s trip in June.
