Legendary Denver Broncos offensive lineman, Mark Schlereth, expressed his disagreement with Jerry Jones, the owner and general manager of the Dallas Cowboys, regarding the trade for quarterback Trey Lance. Schlereth criticized Jones for not consulting with the team’s starting quarterback, Dak Prescott, before making the trade.
Schlereth, who won two Super Bowls with the Broncos, voiced his frustrations on the “Stinkin’ Truth” podcast, stating, “This is why the Cowboys will never win s–t because Jerry Jones can’t help himself. I said it, it’s there.”
In addition to his success with the Broncos, Schlereth won a Super Bowl with Washington and was a two-time Pro Bowler. He believes that Jones should have involved head coach Mike McCarthy in the discussions about acquiring Lance from the San Francisco 49ers.
Although McCarthy revealed that he was excluded from the business side of the trade, Schlereth emphasized the importance of including the head coach, saying, “What does it say about your head coach? ‘Hey guys, I know he’s your head coach, but he truly has no authority within this organization.'”
Schlereth predicts that Jones’ actions will have a detrimental impact on the Cowboys’ chances of success, declaring, “You cannot win in the National Football League that way.”
Despite finishing the 2022 regular season with a 12-5 record and making it to the divisional round of the playoffs, Schlereth doubts that the Cowboys will make a deep postseason run. He believes they will perform well in the regular season but ultimately “s–t in their helmets” come playoff time.
It is clear that Schlereth has strong opinions about Jones’ decision-making and its implications for the Cowboys’ future success.
