ROBERT COSTA: Good morning, Senator Sanders. Thank you for joining us from Burlington today.

SEN. BERNIE SANDERS: Morning, Bob. Happy to be here.

ROBERT COSTA: Senator, President Biden is highlighting the latest jobs numbers, but your recent speech in New Hampshire shed light on the nation’s economic challenges. How did your conversation with President Biden at the White House go, and did you raise concerns about the influence of corporate interests within the Democratic Party as you did in New Hampshire?

SEN. SANDERS: Well, Bob, as I’ve said publicly numerous times, President Biden and his administration have made significant progress in addressing long-standing issues. We’ve taken on the pharmaceutical industry and are working towards reducing prescription drug costs. We’ve invested in outdated infrastructure, and we’re witnessing a resurgence in American manufacturing. However, the reality remains that income and wealth inequality have reached historic levels in our country, predating both Biden and Trump. We have countless families living paycheck to paycheck, a broken healthcare system with exorbitant prescription drug prices, and millions struggling to afford housing. We have structural issues that demand attention. The Biden administration has made progress, but there’s still a long way to go. The Democratic Party needs the courage to confront corporate greed prevalent in every corner of our economy. Corporate profits have skyrocketed while working families suffer. We must strive for an economy that benefits all, not just a fortunate few.

ROBERT COSTA: Senator, you recently met with President Biden. How do you think Democrats are supporting Vice President Harris amidst the attacks she’s facing, as we heard from Ambassador Haley?

SEN. SANDERS: The key question here, Bob, is whether Democrats are doing enough to regain the trust of the working class, who seem to be moving away from the party. Democrats need to ask, “Do you really want to support a Republican Party that aims to cut essential programs like Social Security and Medicare? Do you want to stand with a party that denies the reality of climate change?” The campaign should focus on contrasting the ideas that benefit working families with the Republican agenda of tax breaks for billionaires and catering to corporate America, rather than everyday Americans.

ROBERT COSTA: Is the administration taking sufficient action? In your New Hampshire speech, you voiced the need for more effort. Are executive orders and legislation enough?

SEN. SANDERS: Yes, Bob, more needs to be done. Executive orders can address some issues, but meaningful change requires legislation. What I believe the President should do is rally at least 50 true Democrats in the Senate, not corporate-minded individuals like Manchin and Sinema. With Senate control and a Democratic majority in the House, we can achieve substantial healthcare reforms, including universal coverage, reduced prescription drug costs, and rebuild our economy to prioritize regular people. The message should center around a progressive agenda for working families versus the Republican alternative.

ROBERT COSTA: Senator, there has been speculation about your potential candidacy if President Biden decides not to seek the nomination. What would you say to your long-time supporters who are frustrated with the pace of change under the Biden administration?

SEN. SANDERS: Bob, I believe we spend too much time speculating. At this point, President Biden will be the Democratic nominee, and I am confident that if he runs on a strong, progressive platform, he will not only win but win decisively. The Republican Party, led by a twice-impeached former president, holds positions that undermine women’s rights, deny climate change, and advocate for tax breaks for the wealthy. A serious campaign will show that President Biden and the Democrats stand up against this regressive agenda.

ROBERT COSTA: What about progressive voters who may feel disheartened and consider supporting other candidates like Cornel West or Robert F. Kennedy, Jr.?

SEN. SANDERS: My message to them is that we are living through an unprecedented moment in American history. We cannot endure another four years of Donald Trump in the White House. We need to unite the progressive community and fight for our shared values. While we may have disagreements along the way, it is crucial that we come together and demand a progressive agenda.

ROBERT COSTA: As chairman of the Senate Health and Labor Committee, progressive voters are also looking to you for action. You are currently investigating Amazon warehouses. Can you provide an update on that?

SEN. SANDERS: Absolutely, Bob. We are actively investigating the working conditions in Amazon warehouses to ensure fair treatment and protect workers’ rights. It is essential that we address any issues and hold companies accountable for the treatment of their employees. The progressive movement is committed to fighting for the well-being of workers across various sectors.
