Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District officials have announced the closure of Santa Monica High School (Samohi) on Tuesday due to a power outage.
This outage, caused by a significant blown fuse, has been undergoing repairs since Saturday morning. However, the restoration of power is not anticipated until late Tuesday morning, according to district officials.
In an announcement sent out on Monday evening by Superintendent Dr. Antonio Shelton, it was stated, “Santa Monica High School will be closed for classes… We kindly request all Samohi students to remain at home for the day.”
“Unfortunately, this situation has a cascading effect, resulting in the loss of a school day. Without lighting, including in restrooms, proper heating, ventilation, air conditioning (HVAC), functioning phones, other electrical needs, and access to the kitchen for food services, it is impractical to have school,” stated Shelton.
The district has mentioned that Samohi student athletes will receive instructions from their coaches regarding their attendance for evening games, which will proceed as scheduled.
Students attending other schools within the district will have a regular school day.
Classes are expected to resume on Wednesday, September 6.
