Stylish Revival of ‘A New Brain’ at Barrington Stage

Pittsfield, Massachusetts is currently hosting a brilliantly staged revival of composer William Finn’s musical “A New Brain” at the Barrington Stage Company. Running until September 10th, this autobiographical production humorously explores Finn’s experience with a potentially life-threatening neurological condition.

In 1992, shortly after winning two Tony Awards for his work on “Falsettos,” Finn was diagnosed with a brain tumor at the age of 40. The musical follows the character of Gordon, who represents Finn, as he awaits further tests and treatment for his condition. Gordon reflects on his mortality and fears how the surgery may impact his artistic abilities. He ponders whether the last song he wrote will indeed be his final piece.

Gordon’s medical condition is discovered to be an arteriovenous malformation in his brainstem, which can be resolved through a risky operation. As he contemplates the potential outcomes, Gordon is surrounded by various individuals, including hospital staff, his mother, a colleague, the children’s show host he writes songs for, and his boyfriend, Roger. To emphasize the medical crisis, the set features a striking light-up diagram of the brain designed by Paige Hathaway.

“A New Brain” is presented as a one-act chamber opera, featuring a mix of dialogue and over 30 songs. The seamless direction by Joe Calarco, a seasoned veteran of Barrington Stage Company productions, ensures a smooth flow between scenes using the movement of hospital beds and benches. The production also boasts a talented cast, with Adam Chanler-Berat delivering a heartfelt portrayal of Gordon alongside New York City theater legend Mary Testa as his mother.

The heart of the musical lies in the tender relationship between Gordon and Roger, portrayed by Darren Purcell Jr. Purcell does justice to the beautiful song “Anytime,” which was added back into the production at Calarco’s request. Music director Vadim Feichtner, a longtime collaborator with Finn, can be seen at the front of the stage conducting an unseen five-member band, encompassing Finn’s diverse musical styles.

While “A New Brain” offers an entertaining and emotionally engaging experience, it may leave some viewers wanting a deeper exploration of existential themes. However, in a season that also features a captivating rendition of “Cabaret,” this production still provides a delightful and thought-provoking theatrical experience.
