Fire-Defying Stunt Actor Sets Himself Ablaze at SAG-AFTRA Rally in Atlanta
A remarkable display of solidarity took place at a rally in Atlanta, Georgia, as stunt actor and coordinator Mike Massa set himself ablaze. The rally was organized to support the ongoing strike of the union, SAG-AFTRA, after failed negotiations with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP).
With his flame-licked coat and strike sign held high, Massa, known for his work as Harrison Ford’s stunt double in “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny,” captivated the crowd. Concerned for safety, he took special precautions, including protective materials and an on-site fire crew.
Massa’s audacious act was documented in a video shared on Instagram. In the caption, he expressed his weariness of being mistreated by the AMPTP.
In another post, Massa expressed his gratitude towards his fellow stunt performers. He commended the strong support shown by the local stunt community, leadership, and actors who joined the rally.
The strike, which began on July 14, centers around the actors’ demands for increased residual payments, higher wages, and safeguards against the growing influence of artificial intelligence in the industry.
During the rally, Eric Goins, the SAG-AFTRA local president, highlighted the staggering revenue generated by studios and streaming services, emphasizing the need for fair distribution.
“The work we do contributes to their billion-dollar successes. It is only fair that we share in those victories,” he stated, as reported by Atlanta News First.
Elena Sanchez, an actor and stunt person, echoed the sentiment, expressing frustration at the AMPTP’s resistance to equitable compensation. She reminded attendees of the risks and sacrifices made by the stunt community, including incidents resulting in serious injury or even death.
