Oct. 16 (UPI) — Concerns are growing as a “large feline” was spotted in Lehigh County, Pa., sparking speculation about the resurgence of mountain lions in the state.
The sighting occurred in Lower Macungie Township at 11:44 a.m. Sunday, when a resident captured an image of the animal, as reported in a press release by Pennsylvania State Police.
Police have identified the creature as a “large feline,” potentially a mountain lion, in the fields behind Hanover Drive.
The Pennsylvania Game Commission has been notified and residents are advised not to approach the animal, but to contact the game commission at 610-926-3136 if it is spotted.
Although the eastern cougar was believed to have left the state years ago due to loss of habitat and eradication programs, recent sightings suggest the possible return of these elusive creatures, often referred to as “ghost cats” for their ability to hide.
According to Pennsylvania Game Commission Furbearer Biologist Thomas Keller, there is currently no breeding population of mountain lions in Pennsylvania, but transient wild mountain lions could be passing through the area. Keller cited a previous incident in 2011 when a mountain lion traveled from South Dakota to Connecticut before being struck and killed by a vehicle.
