Study Suggests Multi-Tasking Could be the Cause of Increased Injury Among Young Women Falling Down Stairs
While women may excel at multi-tasking compared to men, this ability may be placing them at higher risk for falling down stairs and sustaining injuries.
Research suggests that young women are approximately 80% more likely to be injured from falling down stairs compared to young men.
A recent study sheds light on why this may be the case.
Researchers observed and filmed 2,400 adults under the age of 40 descending two staircases. They discovered that women were more likely to be engaged in conversation, which could distract them and lead to accidents.
Furthermore, women were more likely to be multi-tasking by carrying items such as coffee, bags, or clothing, making it harder for them to grab the handrail if they stumbled.
To compound matters, women were also more likely to be wearing impractical footwear like high heels or sandals.
Research found women were more likely to be talking to someone when walking down stairs
