Strike-Threatened Emmys Face Top Nominations: ‘Succession’, ‘The Last of Us’, ‘The White Lotus’

“Succession,” the HBO drama about a wealthy family’s battle for control over a powerful media empire, dominated the Emmy nominations, securing 27 nods, including Best Drama.

The final season of “Succession” received widespread acclaim and recognition, raising the show’s total nominations to 27. This announcement, however, was overshadowed by the looming threat of a potential strike by Hollywood actors, which could disrupt the entire awards calendar.

For the second consecutive year, “Succession” led the nominations, particularly in the acting categories. It made history by earning three out of the six available slots for Best Lead Actor in a Drama with Brian Cox, Jeremy Strong, and Kieran Culkin. Additionally, Sarah Snook is favored for the Best Lead Actress award.

“Succession,” a two-time Emmy winner for Best Drama Series, was followed by two more HBO shows in terms of nominations, bringing the network’s total count to 127.

The highly praised video game adaptation “The Last of Us” received major nominations, including Best Drama and acting nods for Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey.

“The White Lotus,” a stylish satire exploring wealth and hypocrisy, switched to the drama category after its second season set in Sicily, and earned 23 nominations.

Apple TV+’s uplifting series “Ted Lasso” dominated the comedy section with its third and potentially final season, receiving 21 nominations.

Netflix’s “Beef” and “Dahmer — Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story” led the limited series category with 13 nominations each.

‘Swift Resolution’

The nominations were revealed in a live-streamed ceremony hosted by Frank Scherma, chairman of the Television Academy, and announced by “Community” star Yvette Nicole Brown. The final winners will be determined through a round of voting by the Television Academy’s 20,000 members, with the 75th Emmy Awards scheduled to take place on September 18.

However, the ceremony is likely to be delayed if the Screen Actors Guild (SAG-AFTRA) initiates a strike. The deadline for negotiations is approaching, and if a strike is declared, stars will boycott the event.

Scherma expressed his hope for a swift and fair resolution in the ongoing negotiations between the guild and industry employers, which have prompted studios like Netflix and Disney to involve federal mediators.

Yet, late on Tuesday, the actors’ union expressed doubt regarding the willingness of the employers to negotiate towards an agreement.

Record Votes

Other shows that received significant recognition from voters include Amazon Prime’s period comedy “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,” which received 14 nominations, and “The Bear,” a cult favorite that delves into the chaotic world of a rundown Chicago sandwich shop, earning 13 nods.

Disney+’s “Star Wars” series had a successful morning, with “The Mandalorian,” “Andor,” and “Obi-Wan Kenobi” collectively earning 22 nominations.

In the battle of mega-budget fantasy series, HBO’s “Game of Thrones” prequel “House of the Dragon” surpassed Amazon Prime’s “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” with eight nominations compared to six.

Perennial Emmy winners “Last Week Tonight with John Oliver” and “Saturday Night Live” will compete against each other in the new scripted variety series category, while “RuPaul’s Drag Race” returns as the favorite for Best Reality Competition Program.

Host RuPaul Charles expressed gratitude for the recognition of “RuPaul’s Drag Race” in these politically challenging times, describing it as a bright light.
