Stephen King’s disdain for Twitter’s ‘X’ rebrand is evident

Renowned horror master Stephen King recently took to Twitter to express his chilling thoughts on Elon Musk’s decision to rebrand the social media platform as X. In his post, King repeated the former name of the Musk-owned app, Twitter, a total of 14 times before clarifying, “And in case you didn’t get that: Twitter.” Musk, who had changed his profile picture to the generic-looking logo of X, responded with “xx” and a kissing emoji. One user cleverly echoed King’s sentiment by strategically typing out the word “Twitter” 13 times to form the letter “X.” Another user sided with King, expressing agreement with his stance. However, not everyone seemed to care about the thoughts of the famous author of “The Shining.” One response dismissively said, “Grow up. Grow up. Grow up. Grow up.” King’s tweet garnered mixed responses, with one user even suggesting that King may have been under the influence. The reactions came in the wake of a widespread reluctance to embrace the new rebranding, which also involved discarding the iconic blue bird logo that had become globally recognizable over the past 17 years. Influential figures such as Irish YouTuber Jacksepticeye and comic book writer Dan Slott joined in the criticism of Musk’s decision. Gary Black, co-founder of the Future Fund and a well-known Tesla supporter, openly questioned the rationale behind the move, expressing concerns about the impact on advertising efficacy due to the loss of the blue bird’s brand equity. Musk’s rebranding of Twitter is part of his broader vision for X to become the “everything app,” akin to China’s WeChat, which offers a wide range of services from payments to food delivery and ride-sharing. Musk’s goal of rivaling WeChat has faced challenges, including financial difficulties and competition from Meta’s Threads platform. Threads recently introduced a chronological newsfeed feature, making it even more similar to Musk’s X. Meta’s CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, responded to a user’s request for this feature, expressing, “Ask and you shall receive” in a Threads post.
