Actor Stephen Amell has expressed his disagreement with the ongoing actors’ strike in Hollywood and across the nation. Amell believes that the strike, organized by the Writers Guild of America (WGA), is a short-sighted approach that does more harm than good. While thousands of actors and entertainers have joined the strike, Amell has chosen not to participate, considering it a “reductive negotiating tactic” that he cannot support.
During a Q&A session at Galaxycon in North Carolina, the 42-year-old “Arrow” actor expressed his concern about the lack of awareness surrounding the strike, stating, “I feel like I’m insulated in Hollywood, living amidst all the existing stereotypes. I believe many in this room are not fully aware of the strike.” Amell emphasized that he supports his union but does not endorse the act of striking.
Amell finds the entire situation frustrating, particularly in regards to TV shows, such as his own recently premiered show. He believes the strike is myopic in its thinking. As part of the SAG-AFTRA strike, actors are prohibited from engaging in promotional press for their upcoming projects. Nonetheless, Amell, originally from Canada and known for his roles in “Private Practice” and “Hung,” as well as his portrayal of Oliver Queen on The CW’s “Arrow,” participated in the Q&A session.
This strike is significant as it marks the first time since 1980 that the 160,000 members of SAG-AFTRA have joined together in a walkout from film and television production. It also marks the first joint strike between actors and screenwriters in over six decades. The strike has the potential to delay numerous upcoming projects until a new contract is negotiated with studios and streaming services.
Both SAG-AFTRA and the WGA are demanding increased pay and residuals in response to the era of streaming. Additionally, they seek assurances that their work will not be rendered obsolete by artificial intelligence in the near future.
