A former employee of Lizzo has filed new court papers accusing the singer of repeated sexual and racial harassment. The complaint primarily focuses on the singer’s wardrobe manager, who allegedly made “fatophobic” comments. The unofficial lawsuit, filed in the Los Angeles Superior Court, names Lizzo, her production company (Big Grrrl Big Touring Inc.), her wardrobe manager (Amanda Nomura), and her tour manager (Carlina Gugliotta) as defendants. The plaintiff, Asha Daniels, was responsible for designing the wardrobe for Lizzo’s 2023 tour. The lawsuit also includes claims of disability discrimination, retaliatory termination, and assault, with Daniels seeking compensatory and punitive damages.
This legal action comes after Lizzo was recently sued by three former dancers who alleged weight-shaming and illegal sexual, religious, racial harassment, and discrimination based on disability. In response to the dancers’ lawsuit, Lizzo denied the allegations and emphasized her commitment to women’s respect worldwide. Attorney Ronald L. Zambrano, who represents all the plaintiffs in both cases, mentioned that more than two dozen former Lizzo employees have made similar complaints about abuse and harassment and may become future plaintiffs.
“This is not going away,” said Zambrano. “Lizzo, as the boss, bears the responsibility. Her tours have created a sexualized and racially charged environment that her management staff sees as condoning such behavior, causing it to continue unchecked. Lizzo is aware of what’s happening but chooses not to stop this disgusting and illegal conduct, and she even participates in it.”
Daniels, who is also Black like Lizzo, initially looked forward to working with the singer and her team due to the positive public image they conveyed. However, the reality turned out to be the opposite, according to the court papers filed by the plaintiff. Throughout Daniels’ employment with Lizzo, she claims to have heard racist and “fatphobic” comments from Nomura, who frequently mocked both Lizzo and her background dancers. The court papers further allege that Nomura would imitate the dancers and Lizzo with offensive stereotypical impressions of Black women, and referred to Black women on the tour as “dumb,” “useless,” and “fat.”
Daniels reportedly complained to Nomura multiple times, but her concerns were dismissed. The plaintiff’s court papers also claim that Daniels and other crew members received threats of physical harm from Nomura. In March, Daniels was fired, and she now suffers from anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder, migraines, sight distortions, brain fog, and fatigue.
