Starmer VS Ken Doll: The Bold Contrast and PM’s ‘Inaction Man’ Critique

During Wednesday’s Prime Minister’s Questions, Sir Keir Starmer referred to Rishi Sunak as “inaction man,” which prompted a response from Penny Mordaunt. Ms Mordaunt compared the Labour leader to Beach Ken from the summer blockbuster movie, Barbie. In her response, she criticized Sir Keir’s record on various issues and labeled him as “Mr Open Borders.”

Ms Mordaunt’s comments came during Business Questions in the Commons, where she addressed Lucy Powell, the shadow Commons leader. Ms Mordaunt sarcastically mentioned that Ms Powell repeated the Labour leader’s joke from the previous day, comparing the Prime Minister to a children’s figurine. However, Ms Mordaunt said she was happy to focus on that comment.

She then proceeded to highlight Sir Keir as Beach Ken, who she portrays as a figure that stands for nothing on shifting sands. According to her, Beach Ken does nothing constructive to address the small boats issue or promote economic growth. Additionally, she criticized his record on union demands, border control, protecting the public, and stopping small boats. Ms Mordaunt drew a parallel between Sir Keir and Beach Ken, suggesting that both have zero courage.

Ms Mordaunt also criticized Sir Keir’s plans to tackle the small boats crisis, referring to him as “Mr Open Borders.” She expressed concern about his desire to stop all deportation flights, maintain free movement, and potentially bring 100,000 illegal immigrants from the EU to the UK. She also mentioned plans to reverse the ban on claiming asylum for those who arrive in the UK illegally.

Earlier in the session, Lucy Powell criticized the government for the lack of forthcoming parliamentary business, blaming the Prime Minister for this. She accused him of being “inaction man” and avoiding parliamentary action. She also suggested that the government lacked ideas and accountability for their decisions and failures.

Ms Mordaunt concluded her session by clashing with SNP counterpart Deidre Brock. She expressed her belief that Scotland deserves better than socialist, separatist parties, calling the SNP “yesterday’s people” focused on outdated grievances. Ms Brock responded by acknowledging the difficulty in defending the current government but noted that it was Ms Mordaunt’s job, at least for now.
