Former President Donald Trump revealed on Tuesday that he has been informed by special counsel Jack Smith that he is a target in the criminal investigation of the January 6 incident.
As the frontrunner for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination, Trump already faces about three dozen counts related to the retention of classified documents after his presidency.
In addition, Trump hinted at the possibility of impending indictment for his actions surrounding the January 6 events, which focus on his attempts to overturn the 2020 election results. Trump shared this statement on his Truth Social platform.
NBC News has confirmed with two sources familiar with the investigation that Smith issued a target letter to Trump.
Target letters are typically sent by the Department of Justice to individuals when there is substantial evidence linking them to a crime, providing them an opportunity to testify before a grand jury.
“Deranged Jack Smith, the prosecutor with Joe Biden’s DOJ, sent a letter (again, it was Sunday night!) stating that I am a TARGET of the January 6th Grand Jury investigation, and giving me a very short 4 days to report to the Grand Jury, which almost always means an Arrest and Indictment,” Trump wrote on his Truth Social site.
Trump expressed that he received this “horrifying news” from his lawyers on Sunday evening.
A spokesperson for Jack Smith declined to comment on the matter.
A hearing regarding the classified documents case is scheduled for Tuesday in a federal court in Florida.
Trump’s legal team has requested that any trial in this case be postponed until after the 2024 election, but the prosecutors representing Smith are against this proposal.
Separately, Trump is also under criminal investigation by a state prosecutor in Georgia for his efforts to convince election officials there to overturn his loss to President Joe Biden in the state.
Neither Rudy Giuliani, Trump’s attorney who led his 2020 election reversal campaign, nor Lin Wood, a lawyer and Trump supporter, have reported receiving target letters from Smith.
Timothy Parlatore, a lawyer representing Bernard Kerik, the former New York City police commissioner who worked with Giuliani in the election reversal effort, stated that Kerik has not received a target letter.
