A consortium, including Southern California Gas Co., has secured funding from the U.S. Department of Energy for a groundbreaking proposal to create California’s first comprehensive direct air capture and storage network comprised of regional hubs. This significant development aligns with California’s efforts to decarbonize and achieve net-zero goals,” stated Maryam Brown, President of SoCalGas. As she explained, California’s transition to net zero requires a diverse range of energy sources and decarbonization methods to effectively reduce emissions, including carbon management. By directly removing one million metric tons of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere annually, this project not only contributes to carbon neutrality but also advances a more equitable energy transition.”
The Department of Energy has allotted up to $11.8 million in funding to support the California Direct Air Capture hub’s exploration of a regional carbon management center in Kern County. This initiative is one of only five projects nationwide to receive funding through the $3.5 billion Direct Air Capture Hubs program, and the sole project in California.
The consortium consists of nearly 40 organizations spanning various industries, communities, tribes, government entities, technology companies, national labs, academic institutions, labor organizations, and workforce development groups, according to representatives from SoCalGas.
SoCalGas will spearhead a Front-End Engineering Design study to facilitate the transportation of captured carbon from the air to long-term carbon storage locations in the region. Initial findings suggest that the hub has the potential to remove over one million metric tons of CO2 annually, which is equivalent to eliminating more than 220,000 gasoline-powered passenger vehicles from the roads each year.
Carbon management, alongside other clean energy solutions like hydrogen and renewable natural gas, forms a vital component of SoCalGas’ comprehensive clean energy strategy to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2045.
