‘Sometimes, the players must step up their game on the field…they must take responsibility for their actions’ – Séamus Coleman

The Ireland captain will not be able to participate in the upcoming games due to his ongoing recovery from a knee injury. However, he acknowledges that their chances of qualifying have been complicated by their loss to Greece in June.

According to Coleman, the upcoming match against the Netherlands on September 10 is critical and must be won.

Regardless, Coleman believes that there is an excessive amount of attention on the manager when the players themselves must also take responsibility for poor results.

“Listen, it’s tough for all of us,” said Coleman yesterday. “Obviously, managers are at the forefront and face the criticism, and I don’t think the manager avoids that.

“Sometimes, the players need to do more on the pitch because the manager clearly puts in the effort. I understand that it’s also a results-oriented business, and poor results have affected both us and the manager.”

“We’re halfway through the campaign, and we need significant improvement in the second half to have any chance,” Coleman added.

“He’s helped many young players develop, and hopefully, we’ll see them thrive. I understand that there were higher expectations for us in this campaign, but we must continue to believe,” Coleman stated.

“In my opinion, the manager is doing everything possible to ensure our success, but it’s also up to the players to perform,” he emphasized.

Coleman acknowledges that the management team has a challenging task ahead, with an away game against France on Thursday followed by a Sunday match against the Netherlands at the Aviva Stadium. He believes that the second game provides a better opportunity.

“Listen, it’s a big challenge, there’s no denying that. I won’t lie to you. However, I do think we can approach the Holland game with an attacking mindset. The three-day gap between matches will be tough, and it will depend on how the manager uses the squad and the injuries we have,” Coleman explained.

“Let’s not forget that France is one of the best teams globally. Playing against them away won’t be easy. However, it would be fantastic to get something out of that match. Against Holland, we need to be in full attack mode. I imagine we need to secure a victory in that game,” he said.

“I believe we should motivate the players by reminding them that they have an opportunity to achieve something special against two renowned football nations. They need to believe in themselves, just as we believed in ourselves during the home game against France. It will definitely be more challenging playing away,” Coleman concluded.
