- I adore traveling, but as someone who easily gets tired, I strategically plan naps during my trips.
- Napping on vacation has caused some conflicts with friends and family, so now I prefer to travel solo.
- Traveling alone is the only way I can fully enjoy and experience the world at my own pace and comfort level.
As a seasoned solo traveler, I have recently discovered an unusual reason why I prefer to explore on my own: I have a deep appreciation for napping during my vacations.
Yes, at 36 years old, I prioritize scheduled nap time in my travel itineraries because I recognize the importance of a good rest.
Unfortunately, this nap habit has occasionally clashed with the preferences of my travel companions, leading me to choose solo travel as the best option.
I prioritize nap time on my trips to recharge
The initial excitement of being on vacation can be overwhelming for many of us.
As a frequent traveler due to my remote work, I often experience this rush. While I am fortunate to explore various parts of the world, the constant travel can leave me feeling exhausted upon arrival at my destination.
My fatigue presents itself in different ways. I easily become overstimulated, causing even mundane tasks like navigating the London Underground or visiting museums to drain me mentally and physically.
In addition, I manage severe anxiety and depression, both of which can contribute to fatigue. While I actively work on managing my mental health, there are times when I dedicate entire days to rest in my hotel room during trips.
Therefore, I intentionally plan for at least one nap during the day while traveling, and sometimes I allocate an entire day for rest. Even if I don’t always need all the time for sleeping, I appreciate having the option available if necessary.
Many consider napping a waste of time on vacation, leading me to choose solo travel
In the past, suggesting a short 20-minute nap to my travel companions has proven challenging.
Most people don’t understand my need for rest and respond with, “Why would you want to sleep while on vacation?” They prefer maximizing every moment by rushing to various attractions or engaging in rigorous activities throughout their trips.
I empathize with their perspective. Since many of my friends and family only have limited vacation time each year, it’s understandable that they want to make the most of it. They have every right to do so, and I don’t want to hinder anyone from experiencing the world to the fullest.
However, I dislike feeling pressured to stay out all day simply because others get easily bored or don’t value breaks. If a friend or family member is eager to visit a specific landmark, I encourage them to go for it while I use that time to recharge. Later, I can join them, feeling refreshed and ready to continue exploring together.
When I’m on my own, taking a nap during a trip is not a big deal. In fact, not compromising on my sleep has greatly enhanced my travel experiences.
I refuse to let exhaustion hinder my exploration of the world. I have become adept at finding opportunities for a quick snooze during my outings. Shady parks and comfortable beach loungers have become my go-to spots. I also don’t mind splurging on a luxurious hotel if it means I can achieve a sense of balance and rejuvenation.
While I appreciate the interest of others to join me on my journeys, if they cannot respect my need for naps, unfortunately, they cannot accompany me.
