The Warren and Downey high school football teams are set to take the field at SoFi Stadium, home of the NFL’s Los Angeles Rams and Chargers, for a Friday night showdown under the brightest lights. This highly anticipated game between the two Downey schools will be held on October 13th and will mark the first high school football game ever played in the new stadium located in Inglewood. The winning team will have the opportunity to return and be recognized before the college football L.A. Bowl on December 16th. This exciting event is part of the L.A. Bowl’s commitment to promoting education, health and wellness, and physical activity in the local community.
The Warren and Downey football programs boast one of the longest rivalries in Los Angeles. In their previous meeting, Warren emerged victorious with a score of 49-22 against Downey. However, Downey went on to secure the CIF Southern Section Division 4 championship. As a former player for the Downey Vikings, Downey High School’s head coach, Jack Williams, expressed excitement for this annual crosstown rivalry game and the historic opportunity to be the first-ever high school football game held at SoFi Stadium. Kevin Pearson, the head coach of Warren High, also praised the Warren vs. Downey rivalry as one of the best in Los Angeles high school football.
“Having been a head coach in the Los Angeles area for 28 years, I’m aware of many great rivalries, but I’ve always said that the Warren vs. Downey rivalry was the best kept secret in high school football,” Pearson stated. “I’m thrilled that Downey Unified, along with the administration, teachers, staff, students, and families, will have this opportunity to showcase their dedication and hard work at this historic event. It is an immense honor for our unique and historic rivalry to be chosen as the first high school football game hosted at SoFi Stadium.”
Tickets for the game will be available for purchase on Thursday at 10 a.m. at ticketmaster.com.
