Snoop Dogg is seeking the dismissal of the majority of claims in a lawsuit that has been revived. The lawsuit involves a woman who accuses him of sexual assault in 2013 and damaging her reputation on social media in 2022.
The rapper’s attorneys have filed an anti-SLAPP motion in Los Angeles Superior Court. They are specifically seeking the dismissal of seven causes of action from plaintiff Jane Doe, including defamation, emotional distress, civil rights violations, retaliation, and harassment. It’s important to note that their motion does not target the sexual assault and sexual battery claims.
The state’s anti-SLAPP law, which stands for Strategic Lawsuit Against Public Participation, is designed to prevent individuals from using the court system to intimidate those who are exercising their First Amendment rights.
The woman claims that the 51-year-old performer, whose real name is Calvin Broadus, forced her into a sexual act in a recording studio bathroom in 2013.
“Doe is attempting to subject Mr. Broadus to a trial that violates his free speech and petition rights. She is basing this on an Instagram post that includes a judge and police emoji, as well as a verbal statement made by an unnamed spokesperson to the media denying the allegations in a previously dismissed federal action. Additionally, she references attorney correspondence that occurred within the adversarial context of litigation,” state the court documents filed by the singer’s attorneys.
The performer’s attorneys admit that their client posted on Instagram in February 2022, saying, “Gold digger season is here be careful Nefews.”
According to the singer’s legal team, both of these speech-related communications were made in a public forum and are directly related to matters of public interest. They argue that these statements are unquestionably protected speech. They also assert that the attorney letter falls under protection as a petitioning act since it is part of the litigation process.
The rapper’s attorneys point out that Doe’s current case, filed in June 2022, is the fifth version of her litigation, as the most recent previous version was dismissed in federal court.
A hearing on the rapper’s motion has been scheduled for May 21, 2024, before Judge Thomas D. Long.
