A 39-year-old rock climber is facing attempted murder charges after allegedly planning to randomly kill people at a Smith Rock climbing event this weekend.

Samson Zebturiah Garner was arrested by the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office on Thursday. He has been charged with multiple counts of attempted murder, first-degree assault, second-degree assault, and unlawful use of a weapon.

During Garner’s arrest, law enforcement discovered a Beretta 9mm handgun, a Sig Sauer 9mm handgun, and an AR-15. These weapons were seized under an extreme risk protection order, meaning they will be held for at least a year.

Investigators found journal entries among Garner’s belongings, which revealed his generalized anger but no specific targets. The potential victims listed in court documents are referred to as “spectator” and “belayer.”

The motive behind Garner’s alleged plot remains unclear, according to Deschutes County District Attorney Steve Gunnels.

Garner, a resident of Portland, was an active member of the mountaineering education nonprofit organization, Mazamas. However, his involvement with the group had been limited since 2018.

Rebekah Phillips, the Executive Director of Mazamas, expressed the organization’s devastation upon learning about Garner’s situation. She emphasized that the safety and well-being of their members, volunteers, and students are their top priority.

The planned attack was targeted at the Smith Rock Craggin Classic, a 3-day grassroots climbing festival organized by the American Alpine Club. The club acknowledged the support of law enforcement in a social media post and stated that they were made aware of the threat a day before Garner’s arrest. The American Alpine Club has not yet responded to requests for comment.

Garner’s activities came to authorities’ attention after tips were received by Portland police regarding a potential shooting.

Deschutes County Prosecutor Steve Gunnels commended the proactive actions of law enforcement. He stated that Garner had driven a considerable distance to Deschutes County, armed and prepared for the attack.

Investigations into the plot are ongoing, but both law enforcement and the Deschutes County Attorney’s Office believe Garner was acting alone and that there are no further threats to the community.
