Sir Elton John starts final leg of his farewell tour.

The renowned 76-year-old music icon has been captivating audiences worldwide with his Farewell Yellow Brick Road show since 2018. Finally, after an impressive 330-date run, his second night at the Tele2 Arena in Stockholm marked the end of this remarkable journey.

Embracing his signature style, the Rocket Man singer appeared on stage adorned in a black suit jacket embellished with colorful beading on the lapel. Opening the show with his hit Bennie And The Jets, which originally featured on the Goodbye Yellow Brick Road album in 1973, Elton John set the tone for an unforgettable evening.

Addressing the energetic crowd after a spirited rendition of Philadelphia Freedom, he enthusiastically exclaimed, “Good evening Stockholm. Well, this is it. This is it. I’m truly delighted to be here in Sweden, a beautiful country. Let’s make it a memorable show. Here we go.” With those words, he launched into the soulful I Guess That’s Why They Call It The Blues.

Paying homage to the late Aretha Franklin, Elton John dedicated the next song on his set list, Border Song, to her. He shared with the audience the story of how he and his long-term songwriting partner Bernie Taupin couldn’t believe their luck when Franklin covered their song from his self-titled second album in 1970. The music legend reminisced about his collaborations with Franklin, including her performance for his Aids Foundation shortly before her passing in 2018, despite her illness. With deep emotion, he dedicated the song “to the legacy of the queen of soul.”

Continuing to captivate the crowd, Elton John delivered energetic performances of his beloved hits such as Tiny Dancer, Have Mercy On The Criminal, and the iconic Rocket Man, which inspired his biopic featuring the talented Taron Egerton. Throughout his illustrious career, Elton John has been a trailblazer, with over 4,000 performances in 80 countries since his first tour in 1970.

Though the tour experienced pauses due to the pandemic and postponed shows in Europe and the UK due to the artist’s hip injury sustained in 2021, the Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour has become one of the highest-grossing concert tours in history. Billboard reports that it has generated an impressive $900 million in ticket sales, and more than six million people have witnessed the magic of Elton John live on stage.

Five years ago, when announcing the end of his touring days, Sir Elton mentioned that his priorities had shifted, emphasizing the impact his two sons, Elijah and Zachary, had on his life. Determined not to follow the path of endless farewell tours, he declared, “This is the end.” However, fans need not worry, as Elton John will continue to pursue his passion for music, with upcoming collaborations featuring artists like Dua Lipa, Stevie Wonder, Britney Spears, and Ed Sheeran as part of his anticipated releases, The Lockdown Sessions, in 2022.

With a remarkable career spanning over five decades and numerous Grammy wins, Elton John’s contributions to the music industry extend far beyond his own hits. He has also made significant contributions to the soundtracks of iconic productions such as Billy Elliot the Musical, Gnomeo & Juliet, The Lion King, and most recently, Rocketman, ensuring his legacy will continue to resonate for generations to come.
