Singer Celine Dion’s Health: An Update from Her Sister

Celine Dion’s supporters are coming together to show their love and support for the global superstar as she continues to navigate life with stiff-person syndrome, a rare neurological disorder.

Following the cancellation of her Courage world tour, the iconic “My Heart Will Go On” singer’s sister, Claudette Dion, aged 74, recently spoke with Le Journal de Montréal about Celine’s time away from the stage. In the July interview, Claudette highlighted that Celine is “working diligently” to manage her condition.

Claudette’s response, translated from French to English, emphasized Celine’s dedication to staying informed by following the research conducted on this rare disease.

In December 2022, Celine Dion, 55, made the difficult decision to postpone several European tour dates and spring 2023 concerts after being diagnosed with stiff-person syndrome. She personally informed her fans through a video statement shared on social media in both French and English.

According to the Mayo Clinic’s definition of stiff-person syndrome, it is an autoimmune disorder affecting the nervous system, often leading to progressive and severe muscle stiffness, along with spasms in the lower extremities and back.

Celine expressed her disappointment in having to postpone shows, but recognized the importance of prioritizing her well-being. She wrote in an Instagram announcement, “It’s not fair to keep postponing the shows, and even though it breaks my heart, it’s best that we cancel everything now until I’m truly prepared to return to the stage. I want you all to know that I’m not giving up… and I can’t wait to see you again!”

Claudette also emphasized the importance of rest for her sister, acknowledging Celine’s tireless dedication and drive. She shared, “Celine always goes above and beyond, always striving to be the greatest, the strongest. But there comes a time when one’s heart and body speak to them, and it’s crucial we listen.”

Despite stiff-person syndrome being a rare condition affecting just a fraction of the population, Celine’s loved ones remain optimistic. Claudette believes in Celine’s resilience and determination to overcome the disorder, stating, “She approaches everything in her life with discipline.”

Claudette also highlighted the importance of providing hope, even in the absence of a cure. She expressed, “While we may not have found a cure, offering hope is incredibly important.”
