Singapore Bracing for Unfortunate Milestone this Friday

Singapore is preparing to break a nearly two-decade streak without executing a woman. On Friday, Saridewi Djamani, 45, is scheduled to be hanged after being convicted and sentenced in 2018 for trafficking just over an ounce of heroin. The last woman to be executed for drug trafficking in Singapore was Yen May Woen in 2004. It is worth noting that both locals and visitors to Singapore face a mandatory death penalty for trafficking more than 15 grams of heroin or 500 grams of cannabis.

Djamani will be the fifteenth person executed on drug charges in Singapore since the reintroduction of hangings in March 2022. Just recently, 56-year-old Mohammed Aziz Hussain was put to death on Wednesday. Tangaraju Suppiah, a local man who was executed in April, was accused of attempting to smuggle 2.2 pounds of marijuana into the country; however, his family and activists claim he never touched the drugs. Singapore’s authorities argue that capital punishment is an effective deterrent that keeps the country safe, despite opposition from human rights activists who call for an end to executions.

Amnesty International has highlighted the lack of evidence supporting the death penalty’s unique deterrent effect or its impact on drug use and availability. Richard Branson, the UK billionaire and vocal opponent of Singapore’s death penalty, has also spoken out in support of Djamani, calling Singapore’s leaders out for hanging people over non-violent drug offenses. Branson urged Singapore to stop its killing spree and grant mercy to Djamani before causing irreparable damage to its reputation.
