Shooting rampage at Ohio Walmart leaves 4 injured, gunman dead, say authorities

An extremely distressing incident unfolded at a Walmart in Ohio where a man with a rifle shot and injured four people, according to authorities.

Law enforcement reported that the tragic event occurred around 8:36 p.m. ET on Monday in Beavercreek, approximately 10 miles southeast of Dayton.

The shooter was discovered dead in the store around 8:42 p.m. from a seemingly self-inflicted gunshot wound, following the rapid response of a police officer, as stated by Beavercreek police.

Subsequently, the wounded individuals were rushed to nearby hospitals, with three in critical condition and the fourth sustaining non-life-threatening injuries, according to the police. It was reported that as of Tuesday afternoon, one victim remains in critical condition, while the others are in stable condition.

All four victims, three women and one man, were customers inside the store at the time of the shooting.

The alleged shooter was identified as 20-year-old Benjamin Charles Jones of Dayton by Beavercreek police.

During a press briefing on Tuesday, Zrinka Dilber, the assistant special agent in charge for the FBI’s Cincinnati Field Office, stated, “The FBI is currently looking at the shooter, his background, his motivation. We are very, very early in this process.”

Beavercreek Mayor Bob Stone commended the swift response to the shooting, asserting that it “undoubtedly saved lives and minimized the impact of this devastating event.”

Acting Beavercreek Police Chief Capt. Chad Lindsey expressed shock and sorrow, saying, “It’s always one of those things where you don’t think it can happen in your community. So anytime it does, it’s shocking. It’s tragic.”

Walmart issued a statement to ABC News, expressing deep sadness over the incident. The company’s statement read, “We’re heartbroken by what’s happened at our Beavercreek, Ohio store. This remains a developing situation, and we’re working closely with investigators on the scene.”

On Monday night, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives; the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation; the FBI; and other local agencies assisted Beavercreek police with the investigation.
