- Artist Jason Derulo faces allegations of sexual harassment from a young female singer in a new lawsuit.
- According to the plaintiff, Emaza Gibson, Derulo coerced her into having sex with him in order to further her career.
- Gibson claims that she experienced mental and physical health issues, including PTSD, as a result of Derulo’s actions.
A lawsuit filed this week alleges that Jason Derulo engaged in ongoing sexual harassment of a young female artist signed to his record label.
The lawsuit claims that Derulo recruited Emaza Gibson in 2021 as part of a collaboration between himself, his label Future History, and Atlantic Records, under the pretense of needing a new artist for Atlantic.
According to the complaint submitted to the Los Angeles County Superior Court on October 3, Derulo frequently made unwanted romantic advances towards Gibson, including inviting her to drinks or dinner.
The lawsuit also alleges that Derulo told Gibson she had to participate in “goat skin and fish scales,” which refers to engaging in sex rituals, sacrificing a goat, using goat blood, and doing cocaine, in order to succeed in the music industry.
Gibson claims that Derulo exhibited aggressive behavior towards her when she arrived late to a recording session due to traffic, and when she reported this to his manager, she was told that Derulo had the right to be angry with her.
Gibson states that she felt pressured by Derulo’s actions and feared that refusing his advances would harm her career opportunities.
In September 2022, Gibson was informed that her employment with Atlantic and Future had ended, and her complaints about Derulo to Atlantic’s human resources department were allegedly ignored.
Gibson has since sought mental health and medical intervention for various issues, including PTSD, breakdowns, weight loss, and insomnia, as a result of Derulo’s actions.
Attorney Ron Zambrano, who represents Gibson, called on Derulo to acknowledge and take responsibility for the pain and suffering he caused.
Zambrano stated, “The entire music industry is due for a #MeToo movement. This sort of conduct is pervasive, but it takes brave people like Emaza to come out of the shadows and share their stories to finally bring an end to this shameful behavior.”
In an Instagram video, Derulo indirectly addressed the allegations, asserting that the claims were false and hurtful. He emphasized his opposition to harassment and his support for individuals pursuing their dreams.
The lawsuit seeks general, punitive, compensatory, and special damages, including medical expenses.
As of now, representatives for Derulo, Harris, Atlantic, and RCA have not responded to Insider’s request for comment.
