Senator demands investigation after lawyer for Hunter Biden accused of false identity claim

FIRST ON FOX: In a bid to address concerns about the potential weaponization of the justice system against President Biden’s political opponents, GOP Senator Pete Ricketts of Nebraska has called for a disciplinary inquiry into Hunter Biden’s legal team. This request comes after a judge accused one of the lawyers, Jessica Bengels from the firm Latham & Watkins, of lying about her identity to court officials.

Senator Ricketts says, “Faith in our justice system has been gravely damaged by the mishandling of recent cases by the Biden administration. It is crucial to hold accountable any misconduct or favoritism, including within Hunter Biden’s own legal team. Restoring the integrity of our justice system is essential.”

U.S. District Judge Maryellen Noreika issued a warning of potential sanctions against Hunter Biden’s lawyers after accusing Jessica Bengels of misrepresenting her identity in an attempt to remove a document from the ongoing criminal tax case involving President Biden’s son.

Bengels allegedly pretended to be affiliated with lawyers connected to the House Republican Ways & Means Committee, which is also investigating Hunter Biden. Hunter Biden’s legal team claims it was an unintentional miscommunication between a staff member at their firm and the Court.

Senator Ricketts is calling for ethics investigations into both Jessica Bengels and lead lawyer Christopher Clark in both New York and Washington, D.C., where they are licensed to practice.

In a letter sent on Friday, Senator Ricketts urged the New York Departmental Disciplinary Committee for the First Department and the District of Columbia’s Office of Disciplinary Counsel to take swift action and investigate the actions of attorneys Christopher Clark and Jessica L. Bengels. This letter followed the collapse of a plea agreement between Hunter Biden and U.S. attorneys earlier in the week.

“While the exact details of this matter are uncertain, it appears an ethical line was crossed,” said Senator Ricketts regarding the misrepresentation allegations. “Regardless of whether it was Ms. Bengels or another staff member at Latham & Watkins who made the call, the circumstances surrounding the incident warrant an investigation.

“Furthermore, it was the responsibility of Christopher Clark, Hunter Biden’s lead lawyer, to ensure that his team conducted themselves in a manner consistent with the Rules of Professional Conduct. It is the duty of the courts, legislatures, and state bars to ensure that members of the profession adhere to these rules.”

“Therefore, I request that both the New York Departmental Disciplinary Committee for the First Department and the District of Columbia’s Office of Disciplinary Counsel open investigations into the conduct of both Christopher Clark and Jessica Bengels.”
