Seeking Justice: Inglewood PD Faces Legal Action for Fatal Shooting – Family Demands Damages

Relatives of a man who was fatally shot by Inglewood police at his family’s home announced on Monday the filing of a damages claim against the city, insisting that the shooting was unjustified.

Ivan Solis Mora, 34, was fatally shot around 1 p.m. on Thursday during a confrontation with Inglewood police in the 10000 block of Grevillea Avenue, west of Hawthorne Boulevard, said Lt. Scott Collins of the Inglewood Police Department and the county Department of Medical Examiner.

During a news conference on Monday, Mora’s mother was joined by other relatives, their attorney, and local activists to denounce the shooting and announce the filing of a claim, which serves as a precursor to a lawsuit.

Inglewood officials could not be immediately reached for comment on the filing.

“We’re committed to ensuring that the city is held accountable,” attorney Christian Contreras said on behalf of the family. “We will exhaust all efforts to deliver justice to this family.”

According to the family, the police were aware that Mora had a history of mental illness as they had responded to previous calls at the residence.

Relatives also emphasized that Mora was unarmed and did not pose a threat to the officers.

However, Collins stated last week that the officers had been dispatched to the home due to a report of a man wielding a knife in the front yard.

Upon arrival, the officers encountered a man who they claimed was armed with a knife and displaying erratic behavior. The suspect fled into the backyard, which had a neighboring property. Despite attempts by the police to de-escalate the situation and successfully apprehend the man, Collins stated that their efforts were in vain. The suspect was shot with pepper balls, rubber balls, and a Taser, but he refused to surrender. Ultimately, the officers fired at him as he allegedly advanced towards them, said Collins.

Cliff Smith, an activist with the Coalition for Community Control Over the Police, shared that witnesses questioned the appropriateness of the shooting.

“Neighborhood witnesses assert that Ivan was shot in the back without any weapon visible, without any commands to drop anything, and without any provocation or justification from the police,” said Smith.
