Second bus transporting asylum seekers from Texas arrives in Los Angeles

A group of migrants from a Texas border city arrived in downtown Los Angeles for the second time in less than three weeks. The office of Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass was not formally notified but became aware of the bus dispatch from Brownsville, Texas to L.A. Union Station. The City of Los Angeles prides itself on treating everyone with respect and dignity.

The bus arrived at around 12:40 p.m., with 41 asylum-seekers on board. They were warmly welcomed by a collective of faith and immigrant rights groups, with eleven children among them. The Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights reported that the asylum seekers came from various countries including Cuba, Belize, Colombia, El Salvador, Guatemala, Mexico, Nicaragua, and Venezuela. Upon arrival, they were provided with water, food, clothing, and initial legal immigration assistance at St. Anthony’s Croatian Parish Center and church.

According to Jorge-Mario Cabrera, spokesperson for the coalition, this time around the situation was less chaotic and stressful for the migrants. Most of them were picked up by their families in the area and were given sandwiches and water. However, six individuals had a different final destination and needed to fly to Las Vegas, Seattle, San Francisco, and Oakland.

This is not the first time Los Angeles has received migrants from Texas. On June 14, a bus carrying 42 migrants, primarily from Latin American countries such as Honduras and Venezuela, arrived in the city. Unfortunately, they were not provided with water or food. Mayor Bass stated that the city would not be influenced by “petty politicians playing with human lives.”

Texas Governor Greg Abbott has previously sent buses to Los Angeles, citing California’s sanctuary state status as the reason behind his actions. However, it is unclear if Abbott was responsible for sending the latest bus. Requests for comment to his office have gone unanswered.

In a similar incident earlier in June, the state of Florida transported a group of migrants from Texas to California’s capital, Sacramento, by private jet. Shelters and aid workers in Sacramento were caught off guard by this unexpected arrival.
