Vince Dunn has secured a long-term future with the Seattle Kraken, as he recently signed a new four-year deal worth $29.4 million. The announcement was made by the team on Friday night, revealing that Dunn will earn an average of $7.35 million annually.
Hailing from Lindsay, Ontario, Dunn had a remarkable season with career-high numbers in goals (14), assists (50), and points (64), establishing himself as one of the team’s top defensemen. His point total was second only to Jared McCann, the team’s center, who ended the season with 70 points.
As a restricted free agent, Dunn avoided arbitration with the Kraken for the second time by signing this new contract. He joined the club after the 2021 expansion draft, initially agreeing to a two-year, $8 million deal in August of that year.
The 26-year-old defenseman made history by scoring the franchise’s first-ever home goal at Climate Pledge Arena on October 23, 2021.
In their second season in the league, the Seattle Kraken qualified for the Stanley Cup playoffs this spring. Despite eventually losing to the Dallas Stars in Game 7 of the Western Conference quarter-finals, the team caused an upset by eliminating the defending champions, the Colorado Avalanche, in the first round. During the playoffs, Dunn contributed one goal and six assists in 14 games, playing an average of 23 minutes per game.
Following the announcement of his new contract, Dunn expressed his happiness and desire to stay with the organization for many years. He spoke about the opportunities he has been given and his excitement for the future, saying, “I know it’s only up from here and the demand is just going to keep growing on me, so I’m ready for that. I’m really excited for what’s ahead.”
Prior to joining the Kraken, Dunn played four seasons with the St. Louis Blues and was part of the team that won the Stanley Cup in 2019 when he was only 22 years old. Dunn brought the Cup home to Lindsay that summer to celebrate with his hometown fans. He also played most of his minor hockey in nearby Peterborough.
Standing at 6-foot and weighing 200 pounds, Dunn has scored 53 goals and provided 148 assists in his 421 career NHL games, amassing a total of 201 points.
