Oct. 18 (UPI) — The Indianapolis Colts have announced that their quarterback, Anthony Richardson, will require shoulder surgery, leading to his absence for the rest of the season. The announcement was made by team owner Jim Irsay on the social media platform, Twitter, after consulting with the medical staff.

“Anthony is known for his competitive nature, and we understand how difficult and disappointing it is for him and the team,” stated Irsay.

Richardson sustained the injury to his right shoulder during the second quarter of the Colts’ triumph over the Tennessee Titans on October 8th. Following the incident, he was put on injured reserve, as per the regulations of the league.

“After gathering several medical opinions, we concluded that surgery was the best course of action for his long-term well-being,” wrote Irsay. “We have full confidence in his recovery and believe Anthony has a bright future ahead.

“In the meantime, we are thrilled by the team’s spirit and remain optimistic about the opportunities that lie ahead. Our next challenge will be against the Cleveland Browns.”

This season, Richardson, at the age of 21, demonstrated his skills by completing 59.5% of his passes for 577 yards, three touchdowns, and one interception. In addition, he rushed for 136 yards and scored four touchdowns in just four games.

Gardner Minshew, the backup quarterback who filled in for Richardson during his previous injuries this season, struggled in the Colts’ recent loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars. Minshew completed 33 of his 55 passes for 329 yards with one touchdown and three interceptions.

Minshew will once again get the starting opportunity in Week 7 against the Cleveland Browns. The Colts will face the Browns, who currently possess the top-ranked defense and pass defense in the NFL, at 1 p.m. EDT on Sunday in Cleveland.

Sam Ehlinger is the only other quarterback on the Colts’ roster, with Kellen Mond serving as the team’s practice squad quarterback.
