Sears and Kmart deal another blow to the Trump brand

White House plugs Ivanka Trump's brand

Sears and Kmart Follow Nordstrom in Removing Trump-Branded Items

In a recent announcement, Sears Holdings, the parent company of retail stores Sears and Kmart, revealed its plan to remove 31 Trump-branded items from its website. The decision was made in order to focus on the company’s “most profitable items,” according to Sears spokesman Brian Hanover.

Hanover confirmed that products from the Trump Home line of furnishings were taken down from the website, although they can still be purchased through third-party vendors online. The physical stores of Sears and Kmart never carried these items.

Searches on the Sears and Kmart websites did not yield any Trump Home products, except for those sold by third-party vendors. The company wants to clarify that many Trump-branded products are still available through these sellers, and prefers to stay out of any political controversies.

Is Ivanka Trump’s brand losing its bling?

Following Nordstrom’s decision to stop carrying Ivanka Trump’s clothing and accessories label earlier this month due to brand performance, President Trump expressed his dissatisfaction on Twitter. Other retailers, including Neiman Marcus, TJ Maxx, Marshalls, and Belk, have also distanced themselves from the Ivanka Trump brand.

According to Slice Intelligence, online sales of Ivanka Trump’s brand dipped 26% in January compared to the previous year. However, the brand defended its performance, citing significant year-over-year revenue growth in 2016. Retailers like Bloomingdale’s, Amazon, Lord & Taylor, Macy’s, and Zappos still carry Ivanka Trump products.

Although Ivanka Trump has taken a leave of absence from her company since her father’s presidency, she is expected to have a voice on issues such as women’s empowerment and child care.
