Search for Missing Sailor Halted by Coast Guard

The search for a sailor who fell overboard from a bulk carrier vessel 14 miles southwest of Point Conception has been suspended by the U.S. Coast Guard. In an effort to locate the crew member who went overboard from the African Cardinal, the Coast Guard conducted a thorough search, covering over 200 square nautical miles in the Santa Barbara Channel Traffic Separation Scheme, while utilizing both air and sea resources. Despite their extensive efforts, the sailor could not be found.

Chief Warrant Officer John Rose, the search and rescue mission coordinator at Sector Los Angeles/Long Beach, expressed his condolences to the crew member’s loved ones and acknowledged that the decision to suspend an active search is always difficult and made only after exhaustive efforts to find the missing person.

The Coast Guard’s Long Beach Command Center received a report early in the morning about the crew member who fell overboard. Immediately, an urgent marine information broadcast was issued to alert others about the situation. The Coast Guard deployed a rescue helicopter from Forward Operating Base Point Mugu, a small boat crew from Coast Guard Station Channel Islands, and redirected the Coast Guard Cutter Robert Ward to aid in the search.

Anyone with information related to the rescue is urged to contact the Coast Guard’s Los Angeles-Long Beach Sector at 310-521-3801.
