It’s been over a year since the infamous Will Smith Oscars slap incident, but Sean Penn is still not over it.
In a recent interview with Variety, the 63-year-old actor called out Smith for slapping Chris Rock on stage at the Oscars in response to a joke about Smith’s wife, Jada Pinkett Smith.
Despite the controversy, Smith went on to win Best Actor for his portrayal of Richard Williams, the father of Venus and Serena Williams, in the biopic “King Richard.”
“I don’t know Will Smith. I met him once,” Penn told Variety. He commended Smith for his performance in “King Richard,” but questioned why Smith didn’t face legal consequences for his actions.
“Why did I go to jail for what you just did? And you’re still sitting there?” Penn exclaimed. “Why are you guys standing and applauding his worst moment as a person?”
In June 1987, Penn was sentenced to 60 days in county jail for punching an extra on a movie set and reckless driving, as reported by the Los Angeles Times.
The actor, who has a reputation for his temper, has had multiple legal issues due to his violent outbursts. In October 1985, Penn received a 90-day suspended sentence and fines for assaulting two journalists who tried to photograph him and Madonna outside of a hotel, according to the LA Times.
In May 2010, Penn was sentenced to probation and community service for an altercation with a photographer the previous year, as mentioned by the LA Times.
Regarding the Oscars incident, Penn also expressed disappointment in the Academy’s decision not to let Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy speak at the 2022 Oscars, following the invasion of Ukraine by Russia.
“The Oscars producer thought, ‘Oh, he’s not light-hearted enough.’ Well, guess what you got instead? Will Smith!” Penn exclaimed to Variety.
