There are about 30 candidates from both parties vying for Santos’ seat, and top contenders are aware of the variables in the moderate district that President Joe Biden won by 10 points in 2020. They are ready for a possible special election as early as January or February, as well as a primary in June and a general election in November. The possibility of redrawn district lines in the November election could complicate matters. The field for New York’s 3rd Congressional District is still taking shape as more well-known candidates consider running. Former Democratic Rep. Tom Suozzi recently declared his candidacy, and other candidates like Robert Zimmerman and Jack Martins have also been mentioned. Santos, who has fabricated parts of his resume, is due in court to answer to criminal fraud charges. Despite calls for his resignation, Santos remains defiant and vows to run for re-election. The Nassau GOP is determined to remove him from office and will consider about ten or fifteen GOP contenders. The Democrats have a larger, better-known, and better-funded field with Suozzi as a strong contender. The Democrats will decide on the party line for a special election with input from various political figures. Republicans are under pressure to back a more familiar candidate after choosing Santos, and top fundraisers like Mike Sapraicone and Kellen Curry are leading the pack. Jack Martins is also being considered as a potential candidate. Santos returns to federal court while the Queens Republican Party Chair Anthony Nunziato has not yet called for his ouster.
