San Pedro Man Arrested for Allegedly Threatening Police Officers

A man was apprehended by police in San Pedro after a standoff at his residence, following alleged threats made towards Los Angeles police officers while holding a knife. The incident took place on Monday morning when officers were dispatched to the 600 block of West 12th Street in response to a call reporting an individual suffering from mental illness and exhibiting violent behavior.

The caller informed the police that the individual had been diagnosed with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and was expressing suicidal and homicidal thoughts. Additionally, the suspect had threatened to shoot any officers who responded to the scene.

Upon arrival, the officers tried to establish communication with the suspect. However, he emerged from his apartment brandishing a large kitchen knife, threatening to stab, shoot, and kill the officers if they approached him, before retreating back inside the residence.

Officials noted that previous encounters with the suspect revealed he was a military veteran who had previously undergone mental evaluation and had a history of parole violations. Furthermore, there was an active warrant for his arrest.

In light of the situation, the police contacted the department’s Mental Evaluation Unit and dispatched additional personnel to the scene. An officer specially trained in the LAPD’s Mental Health Intervention Training engaged in conversation with the suspect, aiming to de-escalate the tension and establish rapport.

After two hours of dialogue, the officers successfully convinced the suspect to relinquish his knife in exchange for a pack of cigarettes. Once the cigarettes were provided and positioned outside the apartment, the suspect voluntarily discarded his weapon over the balcony.

The police then proceeded to arrest the suspect without any further incidents. It is important to note that despite his threats to use a firearm, no gun was found at the scene. The man was subsequently transported to a hospital for evaluation and will face charges related to the parole warrant. His identity has not been disclosed.
