SAG-AFTRA, the union representing over 160,000 screen actors, announcers, hosts, and stunt performers, have voted overwhelmingly in favour of authorising a strike if no new contract agreements are reached with major studios and production companies by the end of June. The dispute revolves around the actors’ call for increased base compensation to account for inflation and the growing use of AI, a threat of unregulated usage of AI, benefit plans and also the cost of “self-taped auditions.” The strike would be limited to television and film productions, with news and broadcast work not directly affected. Negotiations with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers begin this week, with the Directors Guild having recently reached a tentative agreement with studios and the Writers Guild still on strike. The DGA agreement includes securing international streaming residuals that account for subscriber growth, wages, safety, diversity and inclusion, and the addition of Juneteenth as a paid holiday.
