In a glamorous apartment in Krasnogorsk outside Moscow, Russian celebrity and Barbie doll collector Tatiana Tuzova proudly poses with her extensive collection of 12,000 Barbie dolls. Recently, she had the opportunity to watch the Hollywood movie based on her beloved idol, and it did not disappoint. Just like the character portrayed by Margot Robbie, Tuzova lives in a world of both fantasy and reality, where the world of beautiful dolls provides solace from the imperfections of the real world.
“To some extent, this is my world as well. And I even identified with the character in the film, because I feel a tinge of sadness when I return to the dull reality,” she shared with Reuters. “I want everything in the real world to be as vibrant, beautiful, and glamorous as Barbie Land. Unfortunately, when you step out into the real world, it falls short in so many ways.”
Although Russia is a latecomer to the Barbie phenomenon, facing Western sanctions over Ukraine, some cinemas plan to bypass the lack of official distribution by screening a digital copy of the film “for free” alongside a shorter Russian film. Tuzova has graciously supplied 300 dolls from her collection for an unofficial premiere of the movie in Moscow on September 9. While she had hoped to experience it for the first time on the big screen, she reluctantly watched a pirated version to fulfill media requests for her reaction.
Tuzova’s fascination with Barbie dates back to her childhood. “I view Barbie as a role model. Her slogan, ‘You can be anything,’ resonated with me. I looked at her and understood that I, too, could be anything,” she revealed during an interview in her pink-adorned apartment, complete with a massive bow in her hair. A wall of her home houses hundreds of Barbies, ranging from Army and Air Force editions to Party Time and Pretty Flower dolls, all neatly preserved in their original packaging to maintain their value.
Tuzova shared that her childhood was marked by the absence of her father, leaving her with virtually nothing. Determined to have it all, she declared, “And I decided that I would have everything. And everything will be pink.” She appreciates the fact that the Barbie character in the film stays true to herself even in the real world. “She remained herself: she didn’t gain weight or dye her hair brunette. She adapted to the real world, just like I did,” she conveyed.
From her humble beginnings to her vast collection, Tuzova’s connection with Barbie represents a journey of empowerment, resilience, and the pursuit of a vibrant life. The release of the Hollywood movie dedicated to the iconic doll only serves to solidify her passion and ignite a deeper appreciation for the fantasy and inspiration that Barbie represents.
