Actor Russell Crowe paid tribute to the late Irish singer Sinéad O’Connor in a heartfelt Twitter thread on Wednesday. Crowe recalled a serendipitous meeting with O’Connor outside a pub in Ireland last year.
In a statement to RTE, O’Connor’s family confirmed her passing and expressed their devastation at the loss.
O’Connor was 56 years old at the time of her death.
Crowe, a New Zealand-born actor who grew up in Australia, shared how he was in Ireland last year, enjoying a drink with new friends outside a pub in Dalkey when he encountered O’Connor.
“She was wearing a puffy parka with her head bowed, covered in a scarf,” Crowe described O’Connor.
One of Crowe’s friends recognized her, approached O’Connor, and they embraced. Crowe was then invited to join them.
“Under the streetlights, with mist in the air, I met Sinéad. She looked into my eyes and softly said, ‘oh, it’s you Russell,'” Crowe recounted.
The actor and his friends engaged in a free-flowing conversation with O’Connor, covering topics such as a recent heatwave in Dublin, local and American politics, indigenous recognition, O’Connor’s memories of New Zealand, faith, music, movies, and her brother.
Crowe took the opportunity to express his admiration for O’Connor, calling her a hero of his.
“When she finished her second cup, she bid farewell and disappeared into the foggy streetlights,” Crowe added. “The four of us sat there, expressing the same sentiment. She truly was an amazing woman.”
