Admitting to making false statements, Rudy Giuliani, the lawyer involved in Donald Trump’s attempt to overturn the 2020 US presidential vote, acknowledged his accusations of election fraud against two electoral workers in Georgia.

According to court documents filed on Tuesday, Giuliani stated that his statements following the 2020 vote were defamatory and false. He accused Ruby Freeman and Shaye Moss of engaging in activities such as ballot-stuffing to help Joe Biden win Georgia.

Additionally, Giuliani did not contest the false nature of his claims or the liability for claims of intentional infliction of emotional distress. This filing is a result of a 2021 lawsuit brought by Freeman and Moss, accusing Giuliani of being responsible for their character assassination.

The workers argued that Giuliani falsely accused them of criminal acts, including excluding observers during ballot counting and adding suitcases filled with illegal ballots to benefit Biden. Georgia election officials later discredited a video shared by Giuliani that implicated Freeman and Moss.

Former New York mayor and right-wing media pundit Giuliani has been accused of orchestrating a scheme to overturn Trump’s defeat in the 2020 election. This attempt was revealed during public hearings of the congressional committee investigating the January 6, 2021 attack on the US Capitol.

Moss testified before the committee, describing how she and her mother, Freeman, became targets of right-wing conspiracy theories after being targeted by Giuliani.

Giuliani played a central role in Trump’s legal efforts to overturn his election defeat. Trump famously called Georgia’s secretary of state, Brad Raffensperger, urging him to “find 11,780 votes” that would have given Trump the victory in the state. Raffensperger did not comply.

A special grand jury in Georgia is investigating alleged attempts by Trump and others to interfere with the 2020 election. Potential charges resulting from this case are expected to arise later this summer.

The US Department of Justice is also investigating Trump’s attempts to reverse the outcome of the 2020 vote. Trump recently claimed to have received a letter from the government confirming he is the target of the federal investigation. The former president believes the probe is politically motivated.
