Years after its nine-season run finished, Suits has gained immense popularity on Netflix. In a recent interview with the Hollywood Reporter, creator Aaron Korsh revealed that the British royal family had some input on Megan Markle’s character in the show. While there weren’t many changes requested, there were a few irritating demands that the team had to abide by. One of these requests involved replacing the word “poppycock”.
Korsh explained that “poppycock” is a term commonly used by his wife’s family to refer to sensitive topics. The original plan was to have Megan Markle’s character say, “My family would say poppycock” as a nod to his in-laws. However, the royal family opposed the use of the word, probably fearing it could be misconstrued. As a result, the script had to be modified to replace “poppycock” with the phrase “bulls***.” Korsh admits that he was disappointed with the change, as he had already informed his in-laws about the planned inclusion of “poppycock”. Although there were a few other requests from the palace, Korsh doesn’t recall them vividly.
Interestingly, Korsh mentions that the request did not come directly from Markle herself, but rather through a producer or agent. He is unsure about how the royal family got their hands on the Suits scripts but recalls receiving feedback that indicated they were reading them. In Harry’s memoir, Spare, he also mentions the royal family’s interference in the show’s dialogue and character development, which left the writers frustrated.
