INDEPENDENCE TOWNSHIP, N.J. (AP) — Last week, authorities announced that a New Jersey man intentionally crashed his SUV into a home and the offices of a municipal police department, in an act of vandalism.
No one was harmed during the incidents, which both occurred on September 20, as stated in a press release by the Warren County Prosecutor’s Office. However, one police officer narrowly avoided being hit when John Hargreaves, a 34-year-old from Belvidere, drove into the Independence Township police headquarters, resulting in significant damage.
Hargreaves’ vehicle eventually stopped in the department’s squad room. As he exited the car, Hargreaves raised his hands in the air and appeared to be celebrating, while blasting Guns N’ Roses’ song “Welcome to the Jungle” loudly on the car stereo, as officers apprehended him.
The crash at the police station occurred just moments after Hargreaves intentionally drove into the garage door of a home in Liberty Township, with the intention of harassing the homeowner, who is known to Hargreaves. According to prosecutors, he then proceeded to the Independence police station due to its proximity to the targeted residence.
Hargreaves has been charged with burglary, criminal mischief, and a weapons offense in relation to both crashes. Additionally, he faces charges of terrorism, aggravated assault, and causing widespread injury or damage stemming from the incident at the police station.
The motives behind these crashes have not been disclosed by authorities. As of Friday, Hargreaves remained in custody.
County prosecutors were not aware if Hargreaves had legal representation at this time. The Associated Press attempted to seek comment from an attorney who had previously represented him, but only reached voicemail. A contact number for Hargreaves was not found.
