Roblox has recently implemented a new workplace policy that requires remote employees to transition back to working from the company’s headquarters in San Mateo by next summer. Founder and CEO David Baszucki announced this change through an internal memo that was later shared as a blogpost. Employees now have the option to adhere to the Tuesday-Wednesday-Thursday in-office schedule or choose a severance package instead. They have until Jan. 16, 2024, to make their decision, and those who opt out of relocating have until April 15 next year to transition out of their full-time roles. Those who decide to stay will need to make the move to San Mateo by July of the same year.
This change in policy comes as a surprise after Roblox’s previous decision in May 2022 to embrace remote work for its employees. Baszucki attributes the U-turn to the limitations of current virtual work technology, stating that virtual workspaces are not yet as engaging, collaborative, and productive as physical spaces.
Research conducted by the Stanford Institute for Economic Policy Research suggests that fully remote work leads to a 10% drop in productivity compared to in-person work. Challenges with remote communication, mentoring, building company culture, and self-motivation are cited as factors hindering productivity. However, hybrid working seems to have no impact on productivity.
While some companies, such as Airbnb, Adobe, and Lyft, continue to support flexible remote work, several big tech firms have chosen to reverse their remote work policies. Amazon requires employees to come into the office at least three days a week, Apple enforces a similar policy, and even tracks attendance. Google initially mandated the return to the office but later encouraged a hybrid work model. Twitter, now X, requires employees to work in-office for 40 hours a week, and Meta, the parent company of Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, implemented a three-day in-person work policy. Salesforce used philanthropy as an incentive for employees to return to the physical office, pledging to donate to charity for each day an employee comes in. Even Zoom, the videoconferencing company that facilitates remote work, now expects its employees to be in the office at least two days a week as of August.
In summary, Roblox’s new workplace policy requires remote employees to transition back to working from the company’s headquarters in San Mateo next summer. This decision is based on the belief that current virtual work technology does not match the productivity and collaboration potential of physical workspaces. While some big tech companies have embraced remote work, others have shifted toward in-person work models.
