Rob McElhenney Discloses His Disability Diagnosis

Rob McElhenney, the acclaimed actor from the popular 2005 series “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia,” recently shared that he has been diagnosed with a range of neurodevelopmental disorders and learning disabilities.

In a Twitter announcement, the 46-year-old actor revealed his diagnosis without specifying the exact conditions. McElhenney explained that he usually wouldn’t disclose such information publicly, but he chose to do so to support and inspire others facing similar challenges.

Neurodevelopmental disabilities encompass a wide range of conditions, including attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), autism, learning disabilities, visual and hearing impairments, and cerebral palsy.

According to a study conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) from 2009 to 2017, approximately 1 in 6 children aged 6 to 17 had a developmental disability. The American Psychiatric Association reports that 2.5% of adults in the U.S. have ADHD, although other research suggests that many adults with ADHD remain undiagnosed.

In his tweet, McElhenney emphasized, “It’s not something I would normally talk about publicly, but I figured there are others who struggle with similar things, and I wanted to remind you that you’re not alone. You’re not stupid. You’re not ‘bad.’ It might feel that way sometimes. But it’s not true :)”.

Fans responded to his tweet with overwhelming support and gratitude for his openness, with many sharing their personal experiences with disability diagnoses.

McElhenney plans to discuss his full diagnosis and prognosis in an episode of “The Always Sunny Podcast,” which he co-hosts with his former co-stars Glenn Howerton and Charlie Day starting in 2021.
