Rivian Embraces Tesla’s EV Charging Standard, Following Ford and GM’s Lead

By Ed Ludlow | Bloomberg

Rivian Automotive Inc. has announced a new partnership with Tesla Inc., making it the latest company to adopt Tesla’s electric-vehicle charging ports and gain access to its supercharger network. This move solidifies Tesla’s technology as the standard in the industry, with Rivian drivers set to enjoy access to over 12,000 Tesla superchargers across the US and Canada from next year. Additionally, starting in 2025, Tesla’s North American Charging Standard port will be incorporated into Rivian’s existing EV models and its upcoming R2 model.

The news has resulted in a 4.5% increase in the shares of Rivian, based in Irvine, California, while Tesla shares have also risen by 1.9%.

This announcement follows a trend of electric vehicle manufacturers and charging infrastructure companies in North America embracing Tesla’s technology. Ford Motor Co. recently struck a deal with Tesla, followed by General Motors Co. Similar moves have been made by other companies such as ChargePoint Holdings Inc., Blink Charging Co., and EVgo Inc., all of which are now offering compatible chargers.

These developments highlight how quickly the industry is aligning around a single standard in the domestic market. The availability and reliability of charging infrastructure are critical factors for wider EV adoption, and a unified standard offers consumers greater confidence in their plug-in purchases.

Tesla’s charging network is renowned for its reliability, as it ranked highest in a recent J.D. Power survey of EV drivers.

While Rivian has been developing its own network of chargers based on the Combined Charging System standard, it will continue to expand this network alongside its adoption of Tesla’s technology.
