Rishi Sunak’s Controversial Decision: New 20mph Zones to be Blocked?

The Chancellor of the Exchequer, Rishi Sunak, has expressed his commitment to improving transportation infrastructure in the UK. In an interview with Radio York, Sunak highlighted the need to address the issue of potholes, which he claimed were frequently raised as a top concern by the public.

According to Sunak, people from various northern towns and cities, including Hull, York, Leeds, Sheffield, and Liverpool, emphasize the importance of enhancing connectivity between these areas. While efforts are already being made in this regard, he emphasized the necessity of investing in local transportation systems used on a daily basis, such as filling potholes and maintaining bus services, especially in rural areas.

The Labour Government in Wales recently faced backlash after implementing new 20mph speed limits on roads that were previously set at 30mph. A review of this policy has been initiated following criticism from drivers and politicians. Additionally, parking fines issued by private companies have increased by more than 25% in the past year, despite previous promises to crack down on such practices.

Both Downing Street and the Department for Transport have dismissed these proposed policies, labeling them as “speculation.” However, these suggestions could potentially divert attention from the anticipated cancellation of the Birmingham to Manchester stretch of the HS2 rail line due to concerns over escalating costs.

Regarding this matter, Sunak stated that scrapping HS2 north of Birmingham would not be seen as a betrayal. Nevertheless, he refrained from confirming the government’s plans for the project, instead emphasizing their significant investments in transport infrastructure. The decision on the fate of HS2 north of Birmingham was expected to be announced this week but has allegedly been postponed to avoid overshadowing the upcoming Conservative Party conference in Manchester.

Last Wednesday, Culture Secretary Lucy Frazer informed the public that Chancellor Jeremy Hunt was “considering” the future of HS2.
