Rishi Sunak denies India’s request for additional visas in exchange for trade agreement

During his visit for the G20, UK Chancellor Rishi Sunak is set to meet with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to discuss various issues, including a potential trade deal between the two countries. However, it is unlikely that a trade deal will be finalized during this visit.

In their discussions, both sides have agreed to temporarily put contentious issues such as visas, wine tariffs, and protection of Indian industries off the table. The focus will be on business mobility to make it easier for Indian companies to trade in the UK.

India has been pushing for more visas for nurses, care workers, IT professionals, and financial consultants. However, the UK government emphasizes that any agreements must be specific and targeted to benefit the UK economy.

Regarding the return of the Koh-i-Noor diamond and other artifacts taken to Britain, Prime Minister Modi may raise this issue during their meeting.

Indian High Commissioner Gaitri Issar Kumar has affirmed that the visa issue will be discussed separately from the trade talks.
