Continental Unveils Conti CityPlus: A Revolutionary Concept Tire for Urban Use
Continental, the renowned tire manufacturer, has taken a groundbreaking approach to “tire efficiency” with the introduction of their latest innovation, the Conti CityPlus. Unveiled at the IAA Mobility show in Hanover, Germany, this concept tire is specifically designed for urban environments, prioritizing stop-and-go traffic rather than highway driving.
The primary focus of the Conti CityPlus is to combat tire deformation, a common occurrence in heavier vehicles like electric cars when torque is applied during braking or acceleration. By enhancing the sidewalls with a stiffer carcass, Continental successfully reduces these deformations. Additionally, they have developed a proprietary blend of fillers, rubber, and polymer compounds to further minimize tire deformation while optimizing the tire’s contact surfaces. Moreover, the tread pattern has been improved to increase traction and responsiveness, ensuring quicker stops and more controlled acceleration.
According to reports, the Conti CityPlus showcases an impressive 10% improvement in tire efficiency, which could potentially result in a 3% increase in range for electric vehicles. This translates to saving 0.6 kWh over 100 km (62 miles) of driving in a stop-and-go scenario. These numbers highlight the significant impact this concept tire can have on urban mobility and sustainability.
While Continental has not provided a specific timeline for the production and commercialization of the Conti CityPlus, it is important to note that the tire will need to undergo rigorous EU safety testing to ensure its compliance with industry standards.
