On Monday, Spotify announced an exciting new feature powered by artificial intelligence. This feature enables the translation of podcasts into various languages using the host’s own voice, thanks to OpenAI’s advanced voice generation technology that was also revealed on the same day. The use of AI technology allows for the creation of “realistic synthetic voices” based on short snippets of speech, as stated in the press release. Spotify believes that this innovation will enhance the podcast listening experience by preserving the unique speech characteristics of podcasters.
Despite this exciting news, Spotify’s shares closed slightly down on Monday.
During the development of this feature, Spotify collaborated with renowned podcasters such as Dax Shepard, Lex Fridman, Monica Padman, Steven Bartlett, and Bill Simmons. They worked together on selected past and upcoming episodes, which have already been translated into multiple languages including Spanish, French, and German. In the following days and weeks, these episodes will be made available to both free users and paid subscribers. Spotify recognizes the popularity of these languages among podcast listeners and plans to expand the feature to more languages in the near future.
While Spotify has not disclosed specific pricing details for this new feature, they did mention their intention to extend the service to more podcasters worldwide. As part of their ongoing efforts, Spotify is currently collaborating with comedian Trevor Noah on his upcoming podcast project.
“This is just the beginning,” said Spotify in their press release, hinting at the company’s commitment to further advancements in podcast technology.
