Review of the Allswell Luxe Mattress for 2023

As the home editor at Insider, I’ve come to recognize that quality often comes with a higher price tag when it comes to mattresses. However, I firmly believe that investing in a high-quality mattress is worth it, considering you’ll be using it every night for years to come. That being said, it’s still possible to find a fantastic mattress under $500. In fact, during our testing for the best affordable mattress guide, we discovered at least seven great options.

In our guide, our sleep reporter named Allswell’s base mattress as the best overall choice. It’s an incredibly comfortable mattress priced at $350 for a queen size. While it may not be soft enough for side sleepers, Allswell offers an upgraded version called the Allswell Luxe, which is reportedly much softer. The Luxe has a base price of $550 for a queen, but it often goes on sale for around $400, making it an excellent budget-friendly option.

When I needed to quickly and affordably furnish our guest bedroom with a mattress, our sleep reporter recommended the Luxe. I went online, ordered it, and picked it up from Walmart the same day. I want to note that, despite sometimes receiving complimentary mattresses for review, I purchased the Luxe with my own money. Now, let me share my years-long experience with the Allswell Luxe, as well as our sleep reporter’s initial impressions from testing it in 2020.

Design:
The Allswell Luxe is a hybrid mattress, combining springs and memory foam to provide both solid support and exceptional comfort. The spring layer consists of wrapped coils, designed to prevent the typical squeaking associated with spring mattresses. The edges of the mattress feature reinforced springs for improved edge retention. The memory foam layer is infused with copper and gel, adding to its comfort. Both layers are encased in a quilted cover.

Delivery and Setup:
While Allswell previously offered “White Glove” delivery, it temporarily suspended this service during the pandemic and has not yet resumed it. Therefore, your options are either delivery or pickup at a Walmart store. Due to our urgent need for a mattress, I chose the latter option and was able to find it in stock at my local Walmart. The mattress arrives compressed in a sizable box, making it easy to transport. However, given its weight of 90 pounds for a queen size, you’ll definitely need a partner to help you lift and move the box. The setup process is similar to other bed-in-a-box mattresses – simply unbox and cut the plastic, and watch the mattress automatically expand to its full size. The Luxe only took a few minutes to expand fully.

Our Review of the Allswell Luxe Mattress:
Although I purchased the Luxe for our guest bedroom, I have personally spent many nights on it. At one point, my primary bedroom mattress was causing severe back pain, prompting me to sleep on the Luxe until we found a replacement. I must say, the Luxe is an incredibly comfortable mattress, especially considering its price point.

As a back and side sleeper with back problems, the right balance of firmness is crucial for me. If a mattress is too firm, I experience hip and arm pain when sleeping on my side. Conversely, if a mattress is too soft, I suffer from back pain due to inadequate support while sleeping on my back. The Luxe is ideal for side sleeping, but I find it slightly softer than I would prefer for back sleeping.

Unfortunately, the softness of the Luxe also results in poor motion isolation. When sharing the bed with my partner, we both tend to sink towards the middle. While the queen size is suitable for a guest room or solo sleepers, I recommend opting for a king size if you regularly share a mattress with a partner.

We conduct objective tests on all mattresses to evaluate motion isolation and edge retention. According to our sleep reporter, the Allswell Luxe performed well in edge retention, thanks to its reinforced coils around the border. Subjectively, I find the edge retention to be satisfactory – it’s firm enough to sit on while putting on shoes, but I feel slightly unsupported when sleeping near the edge.

The Luxe features a comfortable cover, but I have noticed that it tends to bunch up at night, creating pressure points. While my partner is less bothered by this than I am, it can be frustrating for light sleepers like myself.

Considerations:
As previously mentioned, the Luxe excels in terms of comfort, but mainly for solo sleepers. If you share a bed with a partner, I highly recommend upgrading to a king size, as anything smaller will feel cramped. Additionally, this mattress tends to sleep hot. I personally experience sweating when sleeping alone, and when my partner is in bed, the heat becomes almost unbearable. Therefore, the Luxe is not an ideal choice for couples sharing a mattress.

One minor complaint is that the cover tends to bunch up on the mattress, creating small pressure points that can disrupt sleep. Although they can be smoothed out, it can become tedious to do so every night before getting into bed. While this issue bothers me more than my partner, it’s worth considering if you’re a light sleeper.

Alternatives:
If you’re unsure about the Luxe, you have the opportunity to try it for 100 nights and return it for a full refund if you’re not satisfied. Alternatively, you may want to consider Allswell’s base mattress, which we consider the best affordable option. For more recommendations, check out our comprehensive guide to the best mattresses. We also have specialized guides for cooling mattresses, mattresses for side sleepers, foam mattresses, hybrid mattresses, and mattresses for back pain, catering to various needs.

The Bottom Line:
Overall, the Allswell Luxe mattress is an excellent choice for those furnishing a guest bedroom or seeking an affordable mattress for solo sleepers. Its exceptional comfort and price make it a worthwhile investment. However, due to its below-average heat dissipation and motion transfer, it’s not the best option for couples sharing a bed, unless you opt for a king size.

Pros: Affordable, suitable for all sleeping positions, 100-night trial, 10-year warranty, perfect for solo sleepers and guest rooms, easy setup, available at most Walmart stores.

Cons: Sleeps hot, significant motion transfer, not ideal for couples sharing a bed, cover tends to bunch up.
